You can apply for a Short-term study visa if:

  • you’re doing a short course of study in the UK
  • you’re from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland
  • you meet the other eligibility requirements

Leave will be granted for up to either 6 or 11 months.

  • 11 months is available if you are over 18 and taking an English language course only
  • 6 months is available for any short course (including English language courses), or a short period of research if you’re 18 or over

The rules do not make a provision for an extension to be granted after entry. Prior entry clearance is not mandatory for non – visa nationals and mandatory for visa nationals. It is not possible to apply for this visa category in-country i.e. in the UK. You must have been accepted onto a course of study by an accepted or accredited education institution.

Distance Learners

Those studying overseas for UK qualifications (distance learners who do not qualify as students) who occasionally need to visit the UK for classes or revision sessions may be considered under the Short-term Study Visa (as although the course of study might be longer than 6 months in total, each period of study in the UK is less than 6 months).

Additional information

In order to qualify for this visa, you must satisfy various requirements. Most importantly, you must intend to leave the UK and show you can cover the cost of leaving after your course, you must not take any employment yet be able to adequately maintain and accommodate yourself.
